To ease the pain and grief in his heart Robert Joyce kept believing that he would one day be united with his beloved. He started making a jewel (for her) that would symbolise everything that he felt for her. The dream of finishing this jewel and one day gifting it to her, gave him an inner strength to live through his years as a slave.
Part of his dream came true when he was released from slavery and was a free man. He took the jewel that he had made for his beloved and returned back to the Claddagh village. His happiness knew no bounds when, he met his beloved who was patiently waiting for his return. He gifted the jewel to her and this came to be known as the first Claddagh ring in history. The couple were soon married and lived happily ever after. Some versions of this narration also claim that, the wealthy goldsmith had offered Robert Joyce (after being released from slavery) his daughter's hand in marriage. Robert Joyce refused and chose to come back to his beloved.
